Fightstar Album Review

Fightstar
One Day Son, This Will Be Yours
What, of course, brings this heavy rock team to Cross Rhythms' attention is that their vocalist/composer is Charlie Simpson who used to terrorise the nation as one third of Busted and recently spoke to the media about his Christian conversion after attending an Alpha course. He is backed up by some deliciously chugging riffs and inventive rhythm section interplay from his bandmates while the occasional use of piano gives the whole thing a nice melodic touch. The opening four song salvo is the strongest point of the album, containing as it does "Floods" (already a big hit on Cross Rhythms radio) and "One Day Son", two songs which contain some interestingly spiritual allusions lyrically. In fact, much of this album seems to be bemoaning society's failings in some way. Every song here is crammed full of strong riffs, and a surprisingly large dose of melody for such a heavy record. In musical terms, this is a surprisingly pleasant discovery. In spiritual terms, though, this is certainly not for the feint-hearted and the parental guidance nature of one or two of the lyrics is a tad disappointing. If, however, you are the sort of person who likes to keep up with the spiritual searchings of those outside the Church bubble, this is a powerful and at times brilliant album to investigate.
